His point is this. You are not allowed to modify the code, you are not allowed to re-distribute the code and if you, even without realizing, borrow any ideas from it you could be breaking patents. Why risk it? What real benefit do you get by looking at the source code if you can't at least learn something from it?

I have to agree with him. The only reason I would look at the code would be to see how something tricky or cool was done. I would want to learn from it and use it, in some form, in my code. This is a recipe for disaster and I could be making the company I work for liable for a lawsuit.
